Tropism

Tropism is directional growth or movement of a plant in response to an environmental stimulus.

  • Phototropism is the growth of plants in response to light.

    • Positive Phototropism: plants grow towards the light source. Ex: Shoot System.

    • Negative Phototropism: plants grow away from the light source. Ex: Roots.

  • Geotropism is also known as gravitropism, is the growth of a plant in response to gravity.

    • Positive Geotropism: Growing in the direction of gravitational pull. Ex: Roots

    • Negative Geotropism: Growing against the direction of gravity. Ex: Shoot system.

  • This is controlled by a plant hormone called Auxin.
